(UNTITLED) HOMAGE TO BOY (2008)

(Untitled) Homage To Boy (2008)

‘(Untitled) Homage To Boy’ (2008) was consciously created for the live audience context. Performed at Area 10 in Peckham, this was my first live-making performance which presented the process of making work as the sculpture. Placed inside a dark bunker and surrounded by draping Grecian cloth, I was perched on two plinths wearing nothing but a pair of Y-fronts. For ninety minutes, I physically grafted and handled the clay to create a sculptural male figure that was formed from, attached to and supported by my own body.

The audience crawled into this fantasy space to observe this extremely direct and voyeuristic view of using clay, exposing the personal relationships between a producer and a making process. The performance ultimately ended with two pseudo-classical male figures in unison. The final ceramic sculpture became a result of actions and gestures, leaving behind clay remnants from a process that truly became an 'homage to boy'.
